Exchange 2003:  ISP's SMTP server??
I am getting email rejected by SORBs supposedlybecause I'm not using my ISP's SMTP server. I am currently using DNS routing through my exchange 2003 stmp connector. Is it possible to have exchange point to my ISP for outgoing mail? I thought I just needed to indicate my ISP's SMTP (smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com) as the smart host, but since the ISPrequires authentication I'm not sure what to do...

Kopela- What are the bounces saying. It may be helpful to post them here. As for utilizing your isp's smtp server. This is highly impractical and likely the wrong fix for this. I would imagine that there are many companies in the ip block for sbcglobal that use an exchange server. A couple questions (without knowing the content of your bounces) #1. Is your IP static? This answer is hopefully yes. If so, often mail servers will bounce email messages if there is no reverse DNS entry resolving back to your external ip. (see your DNS hosting company for this) #2. Can you receive messages without difficulty? #3. Your exchange 2003 smtp connector... what is this connecting to? Are you having mail delivered externally and then pulled down by your Exchange server or is mail routing directly to your exchange server. Please post any bounces and such and I will be happy to take a look at them for you.

Chris, thanks for the help. Here are two examples: There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <SERVER_NAME #5.5.0 smtp;553 sorry, that address cannot accept mail from your IP address. RBL message follows: Dynamic IP Addresses See: http://www.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?69.213.60.198> There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <SERVER_NAME #5.5.0 smtp;554 Service unavailable; Client host [69.213.60.198] blocked using dul.dnsbl.sorbs.net; Dynamic IP Addresses See: http://www.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?69.213.60.198> As you can see, it states something about "Dynamic IP". My router is set to "obtain IP address automatically" from my ISP, however it is actually a static IP from the ISP (they ask to have it set to dynamic so that they can changetheir DNS serverIPs without having to notify all of their clients). When I lookup my IP on Sorbs, it states the following: [rDNS 20/06/2006] Dynamic/Generic IP/rDNS address, use your ISPs mail server or get rDNS set to indicate static assignment. Any ideas where to go from here? Thanks again! -AK

Why not setup the smarthost and than configure authentication for your outgoing mail? The SMTPvirtual serveris capable of SMTP authentication (Delivery>Outbound Security). Erik

Thanks Erik, that seems to be what I was looking for, just couldn't figure out where it was. So my email isn't getting blocked any longer, but I'm still on the www.dnsreport.com "black list" I guess... when I go to that address I get the following: Sorry, you have triggered our rate limiting system. If you are reading this in a web browser, we apologize -- we want you to use the site as much as you like. What we do not like is when people use automated programs with our free service. We have the addresses uce@ftc.gov and fraud@ftc.gov here in case spammers are harvesting addresses from our site. Please go here for more details. Your IP is xx.xxx.xx.xxx. Thanks! I don't have any automated programs, so not sure what the deal is.... any thoughts?? ---
